Souvenirs

While I was studying abroad, I wanted to collect one thing from every place that I visited. I ended up collecting maps, but everywhere I went I tried to also collect a post-card. They are easy to transport, I could buy 20 and they took up hardly any room in my suitcase. However, every now and then I would find something special that I had to make just a little extra room for.

Today, I was inspired by Invaluable, the world’s premier online auction marketplace, to talk about some of my favorite jewelry. It took forever to pick something, as I have several pieces that I really, really love. I’ve got things passed down to me from family members, gifts I’ve received, and things I have purchased over the years. But, it was these turquoise earrings that made the cut.

I bought these on Aegina Island in Greece, about an hour ferry ride from Athens. It was our first trip we took, and I fell in love with Aegina. While obviously Santorini was breathtaking (that post is coming soon!), Aegina was small and significantly less-touristy, though not as much as Salamina Island, where many people did not speak any English at all. Aegina has cute seaside towns, clear blue water, white beaches (unlike Santorini, which has black volcanic beaches), friendly locals, and historic ruins. We opted for the white beaches and blue water, of course, taking a paddle boat around for a spin. Before catching the ferry back, we stopped at a few of the shops in the harbor, looking for our required postcards.

Which is where I discovered a treasure trove of turquoise. The Greeks love this stone, probably because it matches the waters and the domed roofs of Santorini, but you can find it anywhere. I picked up these earrings, as well as the big chunky bracelet and a stone bracelet for my mom, all at this little shop.

I think it is important to buy pieces like this, that you know you will wear/use in the future. No one wants to come home with a suitcase overflowing with junky, tourist-trap tchotchkes that will end up in a box in the attic. Find pieces that have meaning, things that you can use and will remind you of your trip.

In addition to my earrings and my bracelet, I picked up the other bracelet and my skirt in Barcelona ( as well as a few other things!). I love being able to wear something and when someone compliments me I can say, “Oh, thank you, I bought it in [insert country here].” I am hoping that as I continue traveling, my collection will only continue to grow!
