What to Wear For Your Engagement Photos

Welcome to the first Wedding Wednesday post of the new year! Obviously, like so many couples around the world as well as several of our friends, Zac and I postponed our wedding from October 2020 to 2021. I know this is a difficult subject for a lot of people right now, but I’m hopeful that these tips are useful now and in the future when we have a sense of normalcy.

So, I wanted to share some tips that I desperately needed- what to wear for your engagement photos?

What do I wear? Where do we take them? Is this too much jewelry? Is my hair falling flat? Why does every Pinterest inspiration photo look the same??

If you are in the same boat as me, no worries! I’ve compiled a few tips that helped make the process easier.

Choose your outfit.

What do you usually like to wear? Do you love getting dressed up or are you a jeans and t-shirt girl? Let that shine! Don’t feel like you have to go with the classic dressy and casual options. Wear what makes you comfortable and makes you feel good! I knew I wanted one super nice outfit, and one that was still nice, as we would be using the photos for our save the dates and website.

Pick your location.

Just like your wedding dress goes with your venue, your engagement photo outfits should go with your shoot location. You might not want to wear a ballgown and heels in the middle of a field, or a sundress if you’re shooting in January. If you can, try to shoot at least a few photos at your venue- it helps you to find the best spots and get used to the layout.

Ask your photographer.

Your photographer has done this before (hopefully!) and should be able to help you figure out everything from location to outfit ideas to poses. Take their advice, they are the professionals!

Coordinate with your fiancé.

You don’t need to match, but at least make sure your outfits go together- if one of you is wearing jeans and a t-shirt, you don’t want the other in a cocktail dress.

Test drive your look.

Try on your full outfit (jewelry, shoes, etc.) to make sure you love it, especially if you’re taking them after work and need to change somewhere. You want to make sure you’re comfortable in your outfit and like the way everything works together.

Get your hair and makeup done.

If you aren’t taking bridal portraits or you’re on a shorter timeline, your engagement photos are a great time to test out your hair and makeup artist. You can use this as your trial, or just an excuse to get pampered!

Don’t stress about your engagement photos- your photographer will help you find flattering poses and angles, and it’s a perfect practice round for your wedding photos. Put on your favorite outfit and go have fun! What did you wear for your engagement photos?
