You’ve paid tuition. You purchased all your schnazzy new dorm supplies. But now you have one more, surprisingly huge expense ahead of you- textbooks.
Most of us are used to spending just a few dollars on a paperback for our English summer reading. But in college, your textbooks can run into the hundreds of dollars per book. So, how can you save that money and get your textbooks the cheap way?
I rarely buy textbooks. I almost always rent them, as it is usually cheaper and you don’t have to worry about trying to sell your books back at the end of the semester, when the school bookstore tries to give you $5 for an $80 book. No thanks.
If you are the tech-savvy type, you can also purchase e-book versions and read them on your iPad and even your computer. There have been semesters where I have not purchased a single book, I just carried my iPad to class. Before I bought my Macbook Air, when I was weighed down by a heavier laptop, I bought a case for my iPad that came with a keyboard. It made going to and from class a lot easier!
So, where do you find all of these books? I always check Amazon and Chegg. I check Amazon, Chegg, and the school bookstore (just in case) until I find the cheapest option, whether that means buying, renting, getting an e-book, or even renting an e-book (it is deleted from your tablet at the end of the semester- no shipping or selling required!).
My best tip for buying textbooks is to do your research. Check websites, see if your friends still have their book from a previous semester, and spend a little extra time to get the best deal. Books add up fast, and with 8 semesters ahead of you, you can never be too careful.
