My graduation is now less than 2 weeks away!! In the middle of final tests, projects, papers, and parties, I have realized that graduating in the winter flies under the radar of most schools. There are fewer events and not as much recognition. My school has an actual ceremony for December graduates, which is better than most schools, but it does seem as though we are almost less important.
I have also discovered that is very, very hard to find outfit ideas for winter graduation. Spring is easy- there are a million posts filled with traditional white dresses or Lilly shifts with cute wedges. However, winter grads get slighted in the fashion department.
To help out, I put together a few ideas for my fellow December grads. Whether you are graduating early or taking an extra semester, these might help relieve some of your winter grad stress.
This outfit is more or less what I plan on wearing to graduation. I bought this navy Adrianna Papell dress a few months back and I have worn it to Zeta functions, luncheons, and now graduation. Winter is definitely the time for darker colors, and honestly all that is going to be seen is your robe.
While winter is usually for darker colors, we are getting close to the holidays, so this is the perfect time to start busting out all your fab red dresses. The long-sleeves mixed with the lace keeps this dress from looking too frumpy, and black tights will keep you warm!
If you’re thinking, “No way Jose, it’s freezing outside and I need to bundle up!!” a sleek sweater dress may be your best option. Pair it with neutral patterned tights and booties to keep it from clashing with your gown, and enjoy being nice and cozy.
Graduation gowns have traditionally been white, but this is certainly not always the case nowadays. If you still want to go with white, however, opt for something a little more ‘winter’ looking. Add a pop of color with your shoes or accessories, since they are the only parts of your outfit that will actually show!
I haven’t really processed the fact that I am graduating just yet. I have been so busy between interning and homework and Zeta things, but I know that it is coming. You all can probably expect a sappy graduation post sometime in the near future, but until then, congratulations to everyone graduating in the coming weeks!
