My Favorite Podcasts

my favorite podcasts

This is a post I have been meaning to write for a long time and am super excited about! Ever since I started working full-time after graduation, I have become addicted to podcasts. Like pretty much everyone else, Serial was what got me absolutely hooked.

Since I get asked about which podcasts I listen to pretty often, I wanted to put together a list of all my favorite podcasts, including what I’m listening to right now, in no particular order.

  1. Up First. If you like The Skimm, you’ll love Up First! From NPR, it’s a 10 minute podcast that goes live every weekday morning and gives you a rundown of what you need to know. I listen every morning when I get in the car for the first part of my commute, and then switch to a different podcast for the rest!
  2. Stuff You Missed in History Class. This was the first podcast after Serial that I really got into. I’m a HUGE history nerd and I ain’t ashamed to say it, but even if you’re not as nerdy as I am, hosts Holly and Tracy give a fun, easy look into bits of history that aren’t usually covered, from women’s history to unsolved mysteries.
  3. Lore. Zac and I are obsessed with this podcast, to the point that we saw the live show in Dallas last year! Lore takes all the legends we know and love and explores the real-life stories that inspired them. We love listening at night to make it extra spooky!
  4. Astonishing Legends. This is another great podcast if you like spooky stories! Similar to Lore, AL goes through old legends, including everything from hauntings to cryptids to UFOs.
  5. You Must Remember This. This is one of the podcasts I got into early on. I love love love Old Hollywood, so it feels like every episode is meant for someone like me. Even if you don’t like old movies, the season on Charles Manson in Hollywood is one of the best series I’ve listened to.
  6. Heaven’s Gate. This is a one-season podcast so it’s perfect if you want to test the waters. I listened while it was airing live and couldn’t wait for each new episode! From This American Life (who produced Serial), the host (a former cult member himself) gives the history of the Heaven’s Gate cult, including interviews with former members!
  7. Dear Franklin Jones. Another cult podcast, hosted by someone who was actually in the cult he’s reporting on!
  8. Criminal. Each episode of Criminal focuses on someone who has something to do with a crime- whether they committed it or were a victim or were somehow involved. Episodes can be hit or miss, but the good ones are good
  9. Last Podcast on the Left. This is another one that isn’t for everyone, but hey, these are my favorite podcasts! They do some great multi-part series and go in-depth into some of the most famous cases. I like it much better than My Favorite Murder, as it is incredibly well-researched.
  10. Dr. Death. Dallas readers will really love this, but be warned- if you have any sort of white-coat syndrome, this miiiight not be for you.
  11. Over My Dead Body. From the same producers of Dr. Death, OMDB covers a new story each season, and so far 2/2 have been fantastic!
  12. Man in the Window. If you loved Michelle McNamara’s I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, or you’re just obsessed with the ongoing Golden State Killer case, give this a listen. It it less about the crimes/the killer himself and more about his victims and includes heartbreaking interviews.
  13. The Teachers’ Pet. Australian accents? A famous football star? A decades-old murder case that was reopened thanks to this podcast? Teacher’s Pet has everything!
  14. Who the Hell is Hamish? Another Australian podcast, this one doesn’t actually involve a murder, but rather decades of financial crimes by a man who swindled ordinary people out of their life savings.
  15. Disgraceland. If you love music history (even if you don’t!) this podcast is fascinating, and focuses on iconic musicians and the crimes they’ve been associated with.
  16. My Dad Wrote a Porno. Stay with me here! The podcast is about, well, exactly what the title says. Host Jamie reads his dad’s dirty, 50 Shades of Gray-inspired book to his two friends, and I’ve never laughed so hard. Maybe don’t listen at work, but this is 10/10 one of my favorites!

These are just the podcasts I’m currently listening to and loving! While I’ve listened to many more, these come highly recommended! What are you favorite podcasts? I’m always on the lookout for more options!
