So the big news over here….I’m employed! It’s been two weeks now, and while I’m still getting adjusted to everything I love it.
I also love finally being able to get up and get dressed, since I feel like 90% of the time I was in shorts and a t-shirt. But now, I can finally wear all the pieces I’ve been collecting for “when I get a job.”
If, like me, you are totally lost on what to wear to your office/internship, then this post is for you. My office is pretty formal, but not too formal, i.e. I can only wear jeans on casual Fridays and I feel like I have to dress up every other day. So what am I supposed to wear??
What to Wear to Work: Week 1
Unfortunately, I didn’t snap a pic of my first-day-outfit, but I wore a pencil dress and nude heels to keep it simple. For my second day, I proudly busted out this J. Crew skirt from a few years ago that I finally got my hands on (I snagged it, along with my shoes, at a resale store with the tags still on!).
Since it’s summer, I wore this little nautical Tommy Hilfiger dress with matching TH wedges. Wedges are totally appropriate for the office, I’ve decided, as long as they work with your outfit.
This might be my favorite dress in my closet (or at least my favorite work dress). It’s Belle by Badgley Mischka, and the fit and length are perfect for the office.
This was my attempt at ‘casual Friday.’ My wardrobe is pretty much either super dressy or extremely casual (like things I would only wear to the lake or lying around the house). I thought chinos and flats was ‘casual’ but everyone at my office said that this outfit was ‘business casual.’ Oops. But, hey, I’d rather be overdressed than underdressed.
What to Wear to Work: Week 2
This dress is actually a tweed material, but still light enough to wear in the summer. My office gets pretty chilly as the day goes on so something like this is perfect.
Tuesday I was feeling extremely uninspired and went with classic black and white, cause you can never go wrong with this combo. Also, these Tory Burch flats are probably my favorite pair of flats (and I own a lot of flats!). I love that they have a really small logo, with a patent toe and a soft leather body to make them extra comfy. I found them at the Nordstrom sale about a year ago and they still look brand new. I linked a few similar ones on ShopStyle below, but I would love to find them again!
I bought this J. Crew dress a couple years ago when everyone was wearing it, and I really didn’t like it at first, so it’s been in my closet ever since. But I figured out that it looks waaaaaayyy better with a sweater/jacket, especially a fitted one to break up the boxy silhouette.
This dress was so bright that I went totally neutral with all my accessories to not look too over-done. I do work in a creative environment, so bright colors and patterns are acceptable, but I didn’t want to look too ‘loud.’
Aaand, my second attempt at ‘casual Friday.’ Everyone else in my office wears jeans and a t-shirt on Fridays, and this is my take on that. For me, dressing ‘casually’ for an office environment is so much harder than dressing up.
If you are totally stuck on what to wear to work, try dressing up a little extra the first few days until you get a feel for the office. It’s ok to be the best-dressed person, but if you are the most under-dressed, it’s a problem!
Is your office more formal or dressy, and what do you wear? Let me know in the comments!
